Overview

The journey of Miss Nepal began in 1994, with the purpose of selecting a representative to compete in the Miss Asia Pacific pageant. Over time, the pageant evolved, and additional collaborations led to the inception of the Kathmandu Jaycees Miss Nepal and Hidden Treasures Miss World Nepal pageants. Since 1998, the winner of Miss Nepal has been sent to participate in the prestigious Miss World contest, with the 1st runner-up representing Nepal in Miss Asia Pacific. The pageant faced a hiatus in 2001 due to the Nepalese royal massacre but resumed stronger than ever.

Miss Nepal’s mission to empower women has led to the expansion of opportunities for the winners. In 2004, the 2nd runner-up gained the opportunity to participate in the Miss Earth pageant, which later changed to the 1st runner-up. In 2010, the 2nd runner-up was selected to compete in Miss International, further diversifying the avenues for Nepalese beauty queens.

Requirements and Eligibility

To participate in Miss Nepal, certain criteria must be met. The applicant must be an unmarried female Nepalese citizen aged between 18 and 27 years, with a minimum academic qualification of 10+2 or equivalent. The minimum height requirement is 5 ft 3 inches (160 cm), and the applicant must possess sound health, with no tattoos on the body.

Note:

  • In 1998, Jyoti Pradhan was dethroned, and Niru Shrestha, the 1st Runner-Up, was given the main title.
  • In 2014, the First Runner-up, Prinsha Shrestha, became the second Miss Nepal to be dethroned for violating her contract with Hidden Treasure by participating in the Miss Eco Queens 2015 pageant. Following her dethronement, the Second Runner-up, Sonie Rajbhandari, was subsequently awarded the title of Miss Nepal Earth 2014 (1st Runner-up).
