What is GPA? GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It’s a measure of a student’s academic performance, calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credit hours attempted.
GPA Scale in Nepal: Nepal traditionally uses a GPA scale of 4.0.
Calculating GPA for Subjects Without Practical Marks: For theory-based subjects, the formula to calculate GPA is:
GPA = (Theory Marks x Theory Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours
- Theory Marks: Marks obtained in the theory part of the subject.
- Theory Credit Hours: The credit hours assigned to the theory part of the subject.
- Total Credit Hours: Total credit hours for the subject.
Calculating GPA for Subjects With Practical Marks: For subjects with practical aspects, the formula is:
GPA = [(Theory Marks x Theory Credit Hours) + (Practical Marks x Practical Credit Hours)] / Total Credit Hours
- Practical Marks: Marks obtained in the practical part of the subject.
- Practical Credit Hours: The credit hours assigned to the practical part of the subject.
General Formula for Calculating GPA: You can derive a general formula for calculating GPA from the two formulas above:
GPA = Total Points Earned / Total Credits Attempted
Letter Grades and Corresponding GPA Ranges: In Nepal’s traditional GPA scale, letter grades have corresponding ranges of GPA points, for example:
- A+: GPA 3.6-4.0
- A: GPA 3.2-3.6
- B+: GPA 2.8-3.2
- B: GPA 2.4-2.8
- C+: GPA 2.0-2.4
- C: GPA 1.6-2.0
- D+: GPA 1.2-1.6
- D: GPA 0.8-1.2
- E: GPA 0-0.8
